Goldsmith (1730-74), of Irish heritage, arrived in London penniless. The manuscript of the Vicar of Wakefield was sold by Johnson for �60 in order to prevent his being arrested for debt. First published in the World Classics Series in 1901, this is a reset edition from 1959.
