John Charles Robinson went to sea at the age of 15 as a midshipman on one of the great passenger and cargo sailing ships to Australia. He rose to become a Commander, toasted by Royalty, on the Union-Castle line, whose mail and passenger services ran regularly between England and South Africa. These are his memoirs, written in his 70s, just after the first world war.
