Illustrated with 21 charts and 8 plates from photographs. 212pp. Indexed. Grey-brown cloth boards, illustrated to front and spine with gilded toolwork. Handsome volume. Internally some mild spotting and previous owner's name on front free endpaper. Written for those who may not have studied astronomy but wish to know something of the stars. Proctor, an American author who popularized astronomy, Her book-length debut, Stories of Starland (1898), was adopted by the New York City Board of Education. She worked as an astronomy teacher in private schools while attending Columbia University. Her articles and books were mostly pitched at younger readers, warranting her nickname of "the children's astronomer". This volume is now very hard to find but remains a delightful tribute to star gazing
