Strong green buckram boards, embossed, bevelled board edges, all text block edges gilded and gilded decoration showing playful fairies around a giant toadstool, to a design by John Leighton (boards rubbed at corners, a little fraying at tips of slightly faded spine). Initial lettering by T R Marquoid and T W Reeve, Chapter Headings decorated by Jules Cheret and W J Allen, engravings executed by J C Cooper. Bound by Virtue & Co, City Road, London. Inscribed by the author to Mr and Mrs Lower, Christmas 1866. Previous owner's name on front endpaper. First signature partially detached but holding , else internally neat, crisp and clean.
