288pp plus publisher's catalogue at rear. Green publisher's cloth boards (strong and bright, rubbed at spine base, fraying at spine head, corners slightly rounded). Lending sheet on front free endpaper, no other library markings, and else internally clean and neat barring mild and occasional spotting. In its original dust jacket, art work by Watkiss (lightly bumped and rubbed at edges, minor loss at spine ends, old interior tape reinforcements). Dust jacket now in archival-quality mylar wrapper to protect & prolong the life of the jacket. It is not adhered to the book or to the dust jacket. Author's first novel, originally published in the US in 1909. Crystal clear writing, vivid characters and a plot which is unusual but not bizarre, it is difficult to understand this novel was not as well received by the critics as some of Glaspell's later works. The public - if sales are a measure - were less harsh.
