xii, 258 plus 52 illustrations, some full page and some coloured. Colour plate frontispiece, tissued guarded. Green cloth pictorial boards, illustrated front and spine. Gilt lettering and top edge gilded (boards gentle rounded at corners, perhaps a little faded, sunned on spine). Mild toning on free endpapers only, else internally neat, bright, fresh and tidy. Firmly bound and square. This book was the outcome of Rev Henry N Hutchinson's suggestion that the author should 'write a book for children, to introduce them to the dead monsters of long ago'. It is delightfully illustrated, and evocative. Scarce title.
