Sir Thomas Bernard was an English Social Reformer and founder of the Society of Bettering the Conditions and Increasing the Comforts of the Poor His father was Sir Francis Bernard to whom Thomas served as confidential secretary, who as Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay had been influential in directing British policy leading to the revolt of the American Colonies. In this tract, which features a cottage and garden near Tadcaster, occupied by one Britton Abbott, Bernard argues for the use of pockets of land to provide homes and vegetables for the poor. Hard to find title. Slim 16vo.
