278pp. Illustrated and indexed. Black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles. In its original dust jacket, very slightly bumped at edges. A compelling account of the outlaws who roamed the American Wild West in the latter part of the 19th century, robbing banks, murdering and running short and long cons. Some - such as Billy the Kid, the Sundance Kid or Jesse James became infamous and romanticised but the majority were common criminals. This volume explores some of the lesser known con artists and criminals and seeks to distinguish fact from fiction (for instance, the evidence presented here suggests that Billy the Kid killed four men, not the twenty odd that some writers have claimed for him).
