In its original dust jacket, designed by Sara Eisenman (just a little rubbed and nicked at corners and spine tips) with signs of an old price label on verso. Burckhardt's essay, as he called it, was first published in 1860, but remains the finest work on renaissance Italy ever written, opening a deep view of the relationship between the individual human and the forces of history.
