First edition, first printing (true first). Prelims plus 320pp. Illustrated endpapers. Bound in black cloth-covered boards with design on front and gilt block titles to spine (boards strong, clean, and square; just a little rounded at corners and spine tips). Dusty top text block edge. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. A tiny chip at the top of the front free endpaper. In its original, unclipped dust jacket, designed by Raymond Hawkey (slightly bruised at head of spine). The dust jacket is now protected in an archival-quality mylar wrapper, fitted without the use of tape or adhesives. Leonard Cyril Deighton is a British author whose works include cookery books, history and military history, but he is best known for his spy novels, including the series featuring the unnamed Harry Palmer.
