[1888] 190pp, 16pp publisher's ads; black and white frontispiece; chapter headers. Blue cloth-covered boards, gilt titles and designs on spine and front, black design on rear. Significant shelf wear to boards. Faded spine, ends bumped. Corners bumped. Binding loose, with a couple of signatures barely attached. Decorated endpapers, presentation plate (1892) and bookseller's sticker on front paste down. 12mo. One of the few, perhaps the only, late 19th century novel to examine the life and work of a policeman as opposed to a detective. In this case it's Constable 42, a man made good by becoming a police man.
