First UK edition, translated from the original French by Edward Hyams. 304pp. In red cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine (the cloth is a little faded, mild mark on front board, gently rounded at corners). Small bookseller's ticket on front paste down, indicating that the volume was once in the stock of Charles Wilson, Bookseller, of 17 Castle Street, Liverpool. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original dust jacket, designed by Osbert Lancaster (worn, chipped on corners and spine ends, bruised at head of spine with minor loss. A sequel to Chevalier's satirical novel, Clochemerle (published under the title The Scandals of Clochemerle in the United States).
