First edition, first printing. xx, 140pp, colour plate frontispiece, illustrated, maps to endpapers. In purple cloth, with green lettering front and spine (cloth a little faded, gently rounded at corners and spine ends). A bold inscription on verso of front free endpaper, a little browning on endpapers, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original, worn dust jacket, lightly chapped at edges, rubbed on spine folds, with a couple of tiny chips on edges). A pleasing volume. 8vo. Covering the Orkneys, The Hebrides and Shetland Islands, MacDiarmmid surveys their history and geology, and the ways of life of islanders, in what amounts to a plea for their preservation.
