xvi, 520pp. Quarter bound in green leather over green cloth-covered boards; gilt design on front, gilt titles on spine. 4to. Light scratches to leather. bumped spine ends. Top text block edge gilt, remaining edges tanned. Volume has been rebound. Previous owner's label on front paste down. Small Hackney College Library stamp on halt and title pages. Prelims foxed but text block itself is very clean. Presentation copy with the inscription - "Presented by the author, April 1889" on title page. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Dust jacket has very light shelf wear, chipping to edges, mirrors book damage, price clipped. 8vo. No. 439 of this limited edition. Tissue protected frontis of Coleridge + various other illustrations and a map of Highgate 'shewing the site of some of the old houses, the Bishop's Lodge, Hornsey Park, The Tumulus etc'. Contents include chapters on :- Ancient Records; The Parish, the Churches & the Cholmeley School; The Hamlet of Highgate; The Houses and their Residents; The Grove, The Fitzroy & the Caenwood Estates; Gossip, Customs etc, Former Residents whose Houses are Unknown; Highgate of To-day; List of Fossils Found in the Archway Cutting. Also includes the programme for the re-dedication of Highgate United Reformed Church April 1984; a leaflet on the history of Pond Square Chapel, and newspaper article from Ham & High about three Holly Lodge tenants.
