Text in English and Russian. Double volume bound into one. Grey cloth-covered boards, black titles on front and spine, in slipcase. Some staining to covers and spine strip has darkened but internally text block and plates are clean. Card slipcase with colour prints, rubbed and bumped. Small folio. Illustrated throughout with numerous colour and black and white plates.
The cycle of frescoes in the Cathedral of St. Pherapont Monastery are by Dionisius the Wise, the great master icon painter of the second half of the 16th century. These are the only original frescoes in Russia preserved untouched in their entirety since the Middle Ages.
