First English language edition. 202pp, with numerous line drawings by the editor. In blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. 8vo. Boards are a lightly rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, lightly faded at extremities. Some spotting to text block edges and endpapers, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original dust jacket, bumped at edges, especially along the top edge where there is an old interior tape repair. A little discoloured and marked. Snobbery has long been seen as a distinctive characteristic of a particular type of Englishman, certainly since Thackeray's Book of Snobs. Jullian recruits a plethora of distinguished writers - Jane Austen, Lord Kinross, Harold Nicolson etc - to help the English see themselves as others do. With witty and penetrating illustrations.
