First edition, first printing. 184pp, with colour plate frontispiece and seven full colour plate illustrations, all by Stead. Red cloth-covered boards with black lettering and decoration front and spine. Original printed letter from W E Johns to 'every boy who reads this book' regarding Captain Lorrington King loosely laid in. 12mo. Cloth boards bright and sharp, just slightly rolled at spine head and tiny indentation on edge of front panel. Hint of shadowing in top quarter of front free endpaper else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. In its original, still bright, dust jacket, a little rubbed on edges with some small scuffs front, spine and rear, faded spine. Dust jacket now protected in a Brodart-style sleeve, not adhered to the jacket or volume.
