First (and likely only) edition. 122pp, with monochrome plate frontispiece plus numerous black and white plate illustrations. In green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on front panel. Top edge sprayed red. 8vo. Cloth a little faded and rounded at corners and spine ends. Small bright pen mark on front free endpaper, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. An engaging and affectionate account of the story of one of the '49's, an Englishman settling in California in the mid 19th century, written by his granddaughter and revealing much about settler life and culture, the challenges they faced and their remaining links, connections and tensions with their home country and cultures. Very hard to find title.
