318pp. In green cloth-covered boards with blind embossed titles on front panel, gilt blocked titles on spine. 16mo. Cloth a little shelf worn all over, lightly rubbed and rounded at spine ends. Text block edges a little toned. Endpapers have hint of toning. Previous owner's name on front free endpaper (dated 1964), else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Translated from the original Russian by Constance Garnett. A collection of around 150 Chekhov short stories, selected from those considered worth republishing from magazines and periodicals after his death, many of which are juvenile work. The rest are mainly pot-boilers which many consider inferior to his major works.
