216pp, xviii. Illustrated with line drawings in text. In mustard-coloured cloth boards with brown titles front and spine. 12mo. Boards a little soiled, sunned and spotted over spine, gently rubbed and rounded on corners and spine ends. Previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. A retrospective book, aimed at older school children. Definitely a piece of its time, it seeks to put context and coherency to continental European history from an island perspective, and to reduce the sense of British geographical isolation and political distinctiveness, retrospectively amounting to an early call for European integration.
