First edition with additions (the title page and spine are dated 1888; there is also a short addenda bound in at rear, relating to 1895, and a small label bound in saying this is the 'latest copy' including the 1895 addenda). viii, 378pp, with plate frontispiece, 15 further plate illustrations and numerous illustrations in text. Beautiful chapter headpieces. In green cloth covered boards with gilt titles front and spine. Bevelled edges. Tall 4to. . Boards are a little rubbed on edges, rounded at corners, and heavily sunned over the spine. Author's compliments slip pasted onto front free endpaper, where there is also an inscription. Gutter cracked between front endpapers. Some minor foxing on first and last few leaves else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. An account of some of the different peoples who have live and around St Mary Bourne, including a history of the parish and manor. Chapter headings include Pit-dwellings, Polished Stone Implements, The Summerhaugh, The Tithings (including the Village School), Pleas of the Crown, The Forest of Chute and Finkley, Parochial Customs, The Chalk, etc.
