First edition, first impression. Signed by the author on the title page. xxii, 456pp, plus three sections of monochrome plate illustrations. In blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. 8vo. Cloth a little rounded at base of spine, tiny mark on fore-edge, else neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. In its original illustrated dust jacket, with mild indentation at base of spine. A tale of burning ambition and longing for power, of financial, political and sexual intrigue, this could be the blurb for one of Archer's novels. It isn't. It's his biography. The man referred to by Margaret Thatcher as the extrovert's extrovert is shown also to be compassionate and generous.
