The text of a lecture on the history of the Van Riebeeck Society for the Publication of Southern African Historical Documents, delivered at the third annual conference of Bibliophiles in Johannesburg in 1978. The Society, founded in 1918 is the oldest surviving historical society in South Africa and the only non-profit publishing society devoted to publishing books on South Africa and its history.
