First edition, first printing. 712pp, sparsely illustrated in black and white. In deep green cloth-covered boards with blind embossed decoration on front panel, gilt lettering on spine. 8vo. Gently rounded at base of spine. Text block edges a little toned. Hint of toning to endpapers else neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. In its original, worn and torn, dust jacket with some loss at spine head and tail. The first full length, definitive biography of Rossetti, exposing some material regarding his early life which previous biographers ignored or suppressed; and in drawing conclusions about Rossetti's death, whether by accident or design, of his wife Elizabeth Siddal, and about Rossetti's passion for the wife of William Morris, Doughty illuminates much that was hitherto obscure.
