First edition, first printing. [1948]. i-xiv, 15-298pp, with over 70 black and white plate illustrations. In orange cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. 8vo. Boards a little rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, sunned over spine. Boards wholly detached from text block. Gift inscription inked onto front pastedown. Text block is neat, clean, bright and tight. The autobiographical memoirs of Sir Alymer Firebrace, chiefly recalling and reflecting on his some thirty years with the London Fire Brigade. He was Chief of Fire Staff and, from 1941-1947, Inspector in Chief Fire Services, leading the national Fire Brigade effort. Firebrace was instrumental in the creatation of the Fire Brigades Union and, unusually for his times, a strong promoter of the employment of women in the Fire Service. Hard to find title.
