x, 484pp, with tissue-guarded steel engraved frontispiece and  ten further tissued-guarded plate illustrations.  Title page decorated and printed in red and black.  Half bound in red leather over marbled boards, five raised bands on spine with gilt titles.  Top edge gilt.  Small 4to.  Boards rubbed on edges and joints, scuffed, sunned and rubbed over a dry spine, significant loss of leather in rear upper corner.  Bookplate of R D Jackson on front paste down.  Some spotting on endpapers and first and last few leaves else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.  Tissue-guard over frontispiece is creased.  

A handsome and substantial volume.
