Karl Pole, a Jewish doctor in Germany before the second world war, was captured by the Gestapo but released. In 1938, with his wife and daughter, he fled Nazi Germany for Switzerland and, eventually, the UK, where he changed his name to Kary. The volume also describes parts of his mother's, Clara Loeb, life - she was a Viennese author and novelist and her time in exile in the UK.
