First US edition.  298pp, plus publisher's catalogue bound in at rear.  Decorated green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine.  8vo.  Cloth is rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, worn, sunned over spine.  Text block edges a little toned.  Some spotting on first and last few leaves, some pencil annotations on half title page, a few signs of handling else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.  

Preceded by publication in London, the US edition of this specific Thackeray work is often considered more desirable as it contains additional material - namely in inclusion of a seventh lecture on 'Charity and Humour'.
