First edition.  viii, 332pp.  Green cloth boards with gilt lettering and decorations.  Title page printed in red and black.  8vo.  Cloth a little pushed at spine ends, gently rubbed on spine joints.  Gift inscription, dated 1909, inked on front free endpaper; endpapers a little toned else internally neat, clean and tight.  

Alfred G Gardiner examines the roles and influence of societal leaders, such as priests, innovators, writers and kings, through history;  with chapters on, for example, on Florence Nightingale, George Meredith, John Singer Sargent, Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw, Rudyard Kipling, The Lord Chancellor, etc.  A handsome and thought-provoking volume.
