[2], 14pp, plus several leaves of tissue-guarded, mounted arms and illustrations including hand-coloured coat of arms.  Quarter bound in brown calf's leather over brown pebble cloth, decorated with gilt rules, gilt lettering on a spine with five raised bands. Top edge gilt.  Marbled endpapers.  4to.  Leather rubbed at corners and around spine.  Library name gilded in corner of front panel, call number gilded on spine.  Book plate and lending sheet from Manchester Public Libraries on front endpapers and small library stamp on verso of title page. Bookplate of J[ohn] J[oseph] Howard, Maltravers Herald Extraordinary, on front paste down. Minor, discrete pencil annotations on reverse of front free endpaper.  Some spotting on first and last few pages and on tissue guards else internally neat, clean, bright and tight.

Records of the Woodd largely extracted from the College of Arms, under the direction of Charles H Lardner Woodd, himself considered a gifted artist. His arms appear within. Also contained in this volume are similar records of the Judd family.

An autographed (signed) manuscript letter, giving further family details and referencing family superstitutions and warnings, from Charles L H Woodd to John Joseph Howard, dated 5 June 1874, bound in.   

J J Howard (1827-1902) was a lawyer and founder of the Civil Service Cooperative Stores.  He was appoinmted Maltravers Herald Extraordinary in 1867 and was a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, founder of the Harleian Society and an early collector of bookplates, publishing examples of the bookplates of baronets in 1895.  

A very scarce volume.
