First edition, first printing.  318pp, with portrait plate frontispiece.  Red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on the spine.  8vo.  Cloth a little worn, gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends, a little rubbed around a sunned spine.  Text block edges dust darkened.  Very slightly soiling to endpapers else internally neat, clean and tight.  

The posthumously published autobiography of Augustine Birrell, British Liberal Party politician, chief secretary for Ireland in the early part of the 20th century who resigned in the face of criticism for failing to take action to prevent the 1916 Easter Rising.
