1st edition, 1st impression, in a presumed second state dust jacket. Brown cloth boards (worn, rubbed and softened). Lending sheet and tape repair to front endpapers, no other library markings, else internally clean and neat if slightly soft. In an illustrated dust jacket (rubbed at edges, fraying at corners, creased along spine with minor loss at head and old tape repair on reverse, a little worn but still handsome. Hard to find novel featuring Superintendant Edmund Bendilow. Carlton's authorship of the books published under his name is contested, some suggesting that his father was the author. Carlton also wrote as Nicholas Ashe. Jacket fitted with archival-quality mylar wrapper to protect & prolong its life. It is not adhered to the book or to the jacket. 12mo
