This novel tells the story of the household of Sir Philip Sidney, the sixteenth century poet, statesman and soldier, largely concentrating on the life of his sister, Mary. Penshurst Castle, the ancestral home of the Sidney family, is near Tonbridge in Kent (and open to the public).
