446pp. Brown publisher's cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine (Boards very slightly rounded at corners and spine tips). Matching, illustrated endpapers. Internally bright and fresh, one page has tiny corner curl. In its original dust jacket (a little rubbed on corners and joints, lightly toned on exposure edges). DJ now protected in archival-quality mylar wrapper to protect and prolong its life - not adhere to book or jacket in anyway. There is an intriguing note on the inner front flap of the DJ which says "the author and publisher assure the reader that there are no pagination errors in the final chapter of this story". John Fowles third novel is an astonishingly compelling narrative, an epic love story and a brilliantly sustained allegory on the decline of the static Victorian ethos and on the birth of the 20th century's passion for freedom. Guild edition issued in the same year as first publication.
