Complete in three volumes in contemporary or near contemporary binding. 1858-60. lxviii, 746; 768; 816 pp. A profusion of full page illustrations, all by John Gilbert, engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. A matching set, magnificently bound, all in full burgundy morocco, deep grained, with elaborate gilt and blind-embossed decorations, five raised bands and gilt decoration and lettering on spine. All edges gilt, delicately gauffered. Inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. (Boards a little rubbed at edges, more markedly so around spine joints, with some small, minor scuffs on leather; spines mildly sunned; a few small, minor marks, corners generally rounded; some mild foxing to preliminary pages in volume one, previous owner's name in pencil in volume three, faint occasional spotting in volume two). Staunton's introduction reflects his painstaking and thorough research into the meaning of the plays; volumes include biographical essay on Shakespeare as well as reproductions of key documents, including the Bard's will in which he leaves his 'second best bed' to his wife, Ann Hathaway. Each play is followed by a short section of critical opinion. 4to. A large and heavy set which will incur an additional charge for overseas delivery.
