176pp. In blue cloth-covered boards with black titles and decorations. Decorative endpapers. 4to. Boards moderately rubbed at corners and spine tips. Some mottling and warping in cloth on verso, near the base of the spine. Internally, a hint of creaminess to pages, with the occasional small mark but generally neat, clean and tight. 12 issues of the monthly journal Modern Languages, issued between May 1890 and April 1891 (the journal was formerly known as Hughes's French and German Journal). Each issue contains a series of notes and articles, mostly in English but occasionally in French and German or another European language, on pronunciation, language developments, vocabulary, translation tips, etc, with a number of exercises etc. Very hard to find.
