Extra pictorial title page, vi, 40pp of text plus 21 plates, the majority coloured by George Scharf. In paper-covered, illustrated boards. Tall 4to. Boards heavily worn, rubbed and indented all round edges, corners chipped away and rounded, backstrip partially absent, the rest fraying, faded, marked and scraped. Hinges cracked causing loosening. Endpapers soiled and stained, front endpapers have previous owner's name (dated 1906) and some crude pencil symbols. First four leaves show some old, inert, damp staining along top edge, extra title page also has some dotted staining at base. Pages a little toned in margins, and the occasional mark and corner damage, else internally neat and clean. Plates remain stunning and text readable - a good working/reference copy. An English translation of the German archaeologist Theodor Panofka's classic early 19th century work on the manners and customs of Ancient Greece as implied from remaining artwork, mostly decorated pots and vases.
