First edition, first printing. x,310pp, with monochrome plate frontispiece and five further plate illustrations. In brown cloth boards with coloured stamp motif and blue lettering on front and gilt lettering on spine. 12mo. Cloth worn and rubbed at edges, rounded on corners and a little bruised at spine ends. Text block edges darkened. Both hinges cracked. Lengthy inscription, indicating the volume was awarded as a Choir Prize to one George Oakes in 1903, on front paste down; front and rear endpapers have further minor annotations. Hint of toning to first and last few pages, and the occasional minor mark. A delightful short novella from the respected author Edward F Benson depicting, often humorously, the idiosyncrasies and quirky personalities of academic life in the early 20th century.
