Not so much a biography as ta study of the life of William Henry West Betty, or Master Betty as he was known on stage, and the curious turns it took. As a actor Betty divided opinion; and he made his farewell to the stage, as a failure, at the age of 32, turning to the retired life of a country gentleman yet still surprising commentators, not least by his longevity.
