In the early part of the 20th century Edward Catich discovered that the finest inscriptions on Roman monuments had been written with a brush before being carved and repainted, setting out his theory in "The Origin of the Serif". Kemp fills in details in Catich's analysis and in "Formal Brush Writing" also presents many ways in which it can be used  as a powerful and versitile calligraphic tool.  A detailed and definitive, step by step, guide to manipulating an edged brush to produce authentic Trajan letters.
