Third edition (first illustrated edition). viii, 224pp, with plate frontispiece and 39 further illustrations in text, all by George Hutchinson. In a private (later?) binding - half bound in tan leather over marbled boards, gilt titles and decorations on spine. 12mo. Boards are worn, rubbed around ends and over spine, with small loss at spine base. Endpapers a little toned and spotted. First gutter strained and one leaf detached.
Study in Scarlet features the first appearance of Conan Doyle's detective, Sherlock Holmes. First published in the Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887, this third edition is the first to feature illustrations. Despite the desirability of the illustrations, this has become a very hard to find edition.
