Basil Willey's inaugural lecture upon his appointment as the King Edward VII Professor of English Literature at the University of Cambridge in the mid 1940s. The lecture is in effect and tribute and an overview of the contribution to the study of English literature of his predecessor, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, who held the position from 1912 until his death in 1944.
