All three volumes of Carlyle's history of the French Revolution bound in one by Relfe Brothers. Not dated but late 19th century edition. 208, 212, 238pp. In a full calf's leather binding by the Relfe Brothers (bookbinder's stamp on reverse of front free endpaper), with gilt decorations front and spine, five raised bands and red leather title label to spine, gilt lettering. Emblem of South Shields High School gilded onto front board. All edges marbled, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, title page black and red. (Boards a little rubbed at edges, drying along spine joints, thin scratch half way across front board and a couple of small scuffs on reverse). Prize presentation plate on half title, indicating the volume was once awarded to Charles King as a form prize by the headmaster of South Shields High School in 1909. The same page also bears an impression of a paper clip. One gutter strained, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight barring very occasional, faint spotting. Firmly bound and square. A lovely edition, in a fine binding, of Carlyle's classic work on the French Revolution, which served as the inspiration for Charles Dickens' 'A Tale of Two Cities'. Would make super gift for history lover or those who appreciate beautiful books. Authoritative and influential history of the French Revolution - The Bastille, the Constitution, the Guillotine
