Both volumes in similar condition: bumped spine ends, cloth wearing. Top text block edge gilt, remaining edges untrimmed. Gift inscription on front free endpaper of volume 1. Mild foxing throughout, worse on prelims. Internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Historical novel of Jacob Faithful who lost his parents in dramatic circumstances and was brought up on the lighters on the River Thames by the owner of the wharf. Volume I includes an introductory essay by George Saintsbury.
