New edition. Undated but circa 1940. xvi, 1680pp, 8pp advertisements in rear. 32 colour plates and nearly 700 illustrations. Quarter bound in red cloth over olive green cloth-covered boards, gilt titles and embossed design on spine. 8vo. . Boards generally worn, rubbed through on edges with some fraying, rubbed on joints, with reading crack along spine, mildly marked. Text block edges a little toned. Hinges strained but holding. First and last few leaves have some edge damage and creasing, with minor loss to front free endpaper and half title; the first colour plate has a small scrape near gutter. Occasional spotting and signs of fingering throughout.
