Complete in five volumes. xvi, 508pp, with one fold-out map; vi, 526pp; vi, 548pp; vi, 518pp [2]; [vi], 594pp. Uniformly and handsomely bound in full red calf's leather, five raised bands, gilt lettering and decorations. Each volume has the coat of arms of Trinity College, Cambridge stamped in gilt on the front panel and spine. Gilt dentelles. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers, surrounded by inner gilt dentelles. Binding by Deighton Bell of Cambridge. 12mo. A large and heavy set which will incur an additional charge for overseas delivery. Spines uniformly faded, otherwise only insignificant shelf wear to volumes. Some occasional spotting to first and last few leaves of each volume, else internally vibrant, clean, neat and tight. Each volume has a small binder's stamp on reverse of front free endpaper. Volume one has a prize presentation bookplate on the front paste down indicating that the set was awarded to H G Easterling by Trinity College, Cambridge for Greek Testament in 1908. A handsome, finely bound set of Mommsen's masterpiece work on the history of Rome, first published in German in the late 1850s, here translated into English by William Purdie Dickson.
