First edition. xiv, [2], 644pp, plus coloured map fold out frontispiece and numerous further monochrome plate illustrations. In deep red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Title page printed in red and black. 8vo. Cloth mottled along fore edge, gently rubbed and rounded at corners, creased along spine with some rubbing and cracking at spine tips. Some small loss on front free endpaper which is partially detached from hinge and has a previous owner's name neatly inked at the top. Slight browning on first and last few leaves else internally neat and clean. Hard to find.
