First edition, first printing, first state (publisher's name in all caps at base of spine). xii, 212pp, with a tissue-guarded frontispiece by John Butler Yeats. Olive green, ribbed cloth-covered boards with publisher's device blind stamped in the centre of the rear panel, white endpapers. Title page printed in red and black. 16mo. Cloth is worn, marked and soiled at edges, rounded on corners, heavily rubbed and brittled at head and base of a heavily sunned spine. Text block edges dust dulled. A hint of toning on endpapers. A couple of signatures loosened but holding.
Yeats' fifth work to be published: a collection of Irish country tales and folklore often reflecting an element of the supernatural. The work was substantially enlarged for a later, 1902 edition.
