Hodgson (b. 1893) an Oxford graduate, lieutenant in the Devonshire Regiment, and poet, began publishing poetry early in 1916, when he was serving in the front, often using the pen name Edward Melbourne. He was awarded the Military Cross in October 1915. He lost his life in the Battle of the Some in July 1916 and this volume of his war poetry was published posthumously. Some sources erroneously credit the first edition to John Murray in 1917. Hodgson is perhaps best remembered for his peom 'Before Action' which is the final verse in this collection. Collection also includes some prose writing and short story.
