Knight's Cabinet Edition of the Complete Works of Shakespeare. Complete in 12 volumes. Undated but published between 1843 and 1856. Each volume with a vignette of William Shakespeare on the title page; each play has an illustrated title page and there are small vignettes often at the end of acts etc. All volumes uniformly bound in green cloth-covered boards with elaborate gilded decorations and lettering on spines. 16mos. Cloth is worn, rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends with some shelf wear and occasional rippling. Internally pages show some slightly wear in places with faint and occasional spotting affecting the first and last few leaves in some volumes. The occasional cracked gutter, slightly loosening.
Knight's Cabinet Edition of the works of Shakespeare is highly regarded for both its rendering of Shakespeare's language and for the presentation of the volumes. First published in 1843, this edition states in the preface that this was 'some years ago'. And Chamber's editions of Knight's Cabinet Edition were dated after 1856.
